

A New Land Part 9Except by the prince. He found her the next morning in the practice yard. She was dancing with Jalmin again in the predawn light. She did move very well, he thought. Her knife seemed to dance all on its own, independent from its wielder. She met Jalmin at every step. Those were no light blows they met with. When they were finished she took a moment to speak with Jalmin. He could not hear what she told him, but Jalmin nodded and walked away. A New Land Part 8Jalmin caught up with her in their rooms. Where are you going? Keilai had changed out of her expensive gown. She now wore more inconspicuous clothes, the same she had worn earlier that day on her ride with the prince. Her hair had been taken down and was braided loosely down her back. All jewelry had been removed. The little color she had used on her face to enhance her features was wiped off. Out. Out where? She turned away from the mirror she had been studying her appearance in. A New Land Part 7The ballroom was filled with music and dancing. Bodies wove through each other with practiced precision, both on the dance floor and off of it, that evoked thoughts of chaos, like ripples in a pond. Richly dressed noblemen and women were made merry with deep wines. Gold and gemstones sparkled in the glow of a thousand lights. Smartly dressed servants made their ways through the crowd carrying trays laden with refreshments. Keilai stood on the outskirts, watching. She was furious once more with the prince. A New Land Part 6The next morning saw Keilai in the kings chambers. She could guess what he wanted to discuss with her, but she sat quietly, hands crossed in her lap, waiting for him to speak first. Finally Ronal sighed and spoke, confirming her suspicions. Lorden tells me of the incident that happened yesterday morning. Several other sources, including Master Noring, confirm some of his story, though they could not tell me what the argument was about. He looked at her expectantly. The prince insulted Jalmin.
